A Simple Way to Start Your Child's Day with Encouragement
There are some mornings when everything seems to run smoothly.
And then there are the mornings when someone can't find their shoes, the cereal gets spilled, and everyone is rushing out the door before the day has even really started.
If you're a parent, you've probably experienced both.
As moms, dads, grandparents, and caregivers, we're always looking for little ways to remind our kids how loved they are—even on the busy days. One of my favorite ideas is also one of the simplest.
All you need is a washable dry-erase marker and a bathroom mirror.
Before your child wakes up, write a short note or encouraging message on the mirror.
That's it.
No fancy supplies. No complicated routine. Just a few words waiting for them when they start their day.
Why I Love This Idea
Kids spend a surprising amount of time looking in the bathroom mirror while they're getting ready for school. They're brushing their teeth, fixing their hair, or simply staring sleepily at their reflection while they wake up.
Imagine being greeted by a little note that says:
"You've got this today."
"Remember how brave you are."
"I love being your mom."
Those words might only take a minute to write, but they can stay with a child all day long.
Sometimes the smallest gestures are the ones children remember most.
What Can You Write?
The good news is that it doesn't have to be perfect. In fact, the simpler and more genuine, the better.
Here are a few ideas:
On an Ordinary School Morning
You are capable of amazing things.
Be kind, be brave, be you.
The world is lucky to have you in it.
I can't wait to hear about your day.
Before a Test, Game, or Big Event
You've worked hard. Trust yourself.
Do your best and let that be enough.
I believe in you.
You've got this.
After a Tough Day
Today is a brand-new start.
One hard day doesn't define you.
You are loved exactly as you are.
Tomorrow is full of new possibilities.
Just for Fun
Today's mission: make someone smile.
Your smile is my favorite.
Adventure awaits!
Go be your awesome self today.
A Few Tips from One Parent to Another
Write It the Night Before
There's something extra special about your child discovering it first thing in the morning.
Keep It Short
You don't need a long speech. A few heartfelt words are often more meaningful than a paragraph.
Let Your Child Join In
Some families turn this into a little tradition. Kids can leave notes for siblings, parents, or even write encouraging messages to themselves.
Give Yourself Some Encouragement Too
While you're writing on your child's mirror, consider leaving yourself a note as well.
Something simple like:
"You're doing better than you think."
Because sometimes parents need reminders too.
The Little Things Matter
When I think about the adults who made me feel loved growing up, I rarely remember the big, elaborate moments.
I remember the little things.
The notes tucked into lunch boxes.
The hugs before school.
The encouraging words when I was nervous.
A message on a bathroom mirror may seem small, but childhood is often built from small moments repeated over and over again.
Those tiny reminders of love, confidence, and encouragement can quietly become part of the way children see themselves.
At My Magic Tux, we believe every child already has something special inside them. Sometimes they just need a few gentle reminders to help them see it too. Whether it's through a story shared at bedtime, a conversation in the car, or a note written on the bathroom mirror, those moments of encouragement matter more than we realize.
